Tesla has recently announced the V3 Solar Roof, the third iteration of its solar roof tile for residential home use. The solar roof tiles are designed to look just like normal roof tiles when installed on a house, while doubling as solar panels to generate power.
The company says that it has increased power density, reduced the parts used in the tiles by half and brought down costs substantially compared to the second generation tiles.
According to CEO Elon Musk, if you need a new roof, installing their solar roof tiles will be cheaper than a new roof and separate PV solar panels in most cases.
Tesla will initially begin installing the roof tiles themselves but plan to start using third-party contractors to install the roofs. The target is to have these roofs installed in eight hours and ramp production to as many as 1,000 new roofs per week.
